This walk takes you straight from Lilydale Heights College to Lilydale Station and the shopping strips beyond in under 30 minutes. See how easy it is to walk to the station and to the shops.
From Lilydale Heights College, head east down Nelson Rd towards Cave Hill Rd. Stop at the wayfinding sign on the corner and use the QR code to access the Wurundjeri Wandoon story of Waa, the protector.
Listen to or read the historical story of Cooring Yering. This mansion was built in 1849 and is still standing today.
Make your way along Cave Hill Rd and take a detour into Poyner Reserve. Take a moment at the entrance to read the Wurundjeri Wandoon story of Bundjil. Stay listening to the historical stories of the region. Cave Hill Rd hosts a group of nineteenth century homes built for the managers of the Cave Hill Quarry. These homes are included in the Shire of Yarra Ranges Heritage Overlay.
Read about Aunty Kim and Chris Joy's inspiration for Bour-deet then enjoy a walk around Poyner Reserve to experience Bour-deet up close. Bour-deet is the indigenous word for the cumbumgi, or bull-rush plant, and it grows in the water way right beside the sculpture.
Continue along Cave Hill Rd towards Maroondah Hwy to find your next wayfinding sign at the corner.
Use the QR code to read or listen to the Wurundjeri Wandoon story of William Barak. William Barak was appointed 'Ngurungaeta' meaning headman after the passing of his cousin Simon Wonga. Barak is considered to be the last traditional 'Ngurungaeta' of his people.
Learn also about the historical stories of the location. This area was referred to as the Duck Swamp due to repeated flooding. The location of the service station (7/11) was originally Deschamps Wine Hall and was a meeting place for locals in 1878.
