To get from Fairfield to the CBD in a reasonably efficient route requires much walking along roads. However a fair portion of it can be done through Yarra Bend park without much of a detour.

1. Start from the play ground south of Heidelberg round and east of Westfied reserve (POI 1). Walk West along the asphalt path avoiding left turns down the hill.
2. Turn right just after the oval onto a concrete path (POI 2) between the oval and building. Cross Yarra Bend Road (a very small road) and follow the path south along Merri Creek. The Merri creek section is particularly pleasant.
3. Around the Eastern Freeway the path starts to curve and stops being an efficient route, and you need to take roads the rest of the way - there are many obvious ways to do this.
4. There are two bridges across the Merri Creek to reach Clifton Hill.
The first (POI 3) is my preferred path. You can then take Roseneath Street West which is quite pleasant. Hoddle St is relatively easy to cross north of the freeway, but of course you have to cross Alexander Parade at some point.
The second (POI 4) appears preferable - you don't have to cross Alexander Pde, and you spend more time on park.
However you come out of the lovely park suddenly onto the off ramp from the Eastern Freeway onto Hoddle Street - I find this jarring and unpleasant. However it can work well if you wish to then take the train the rest of the distance into the city.
5. If you head more or less directly east from Yarra bend park you have many chances to take a tram the rest of the way if you are tired and/or running late.
6. The entire Yarra bend section of the walk has good quality paths and is suitable for rainy weather.

A nice spot to stop for a picnic or to enjoy the view.
