Along the Mornington foreshore, up Herbert St to Strattons Lane, past the Primary School into Main St and back to the foreshore
Start at the Old Court House Visitor Centre on the corner of the Esplanade and Main St. It is open a minimum 11am to 3pm most days. The building is still in perfect condition with the original cell block out the back!
Cross the Esplanade to Mornington Park where there is a children’s playground and barbecues all surrounded by a fort-like wall. On the opposite corner of the Esplanade and Schnapper Point Drive is a monument to the Mornington Football Disaster of 1892. Walk up Schnapper Point Drive until you come to stairs that lead to the summit of Schnapper Point. At the top is a monument to Matthew Flinders. Take the stairs down at the opposite end and head to the Mornington Pier with views of ‘The Rocks’ Restaurant, back to Mornington and across the water to Melbourne.
Follow the path in front of The Rocks and along the beach where multi-coloured bathing boxes stand out against the dark-green treed background. Just past the bathing boxes is a scrubby path. It is the only way through as the foreshore is inaccessible at the water. Follow it to the end. Go down the wooden steps to the foreshore again, over the bridge at the Tanti Creek outlet then to the end of the promenade. The Mornington Lifesaving Club and more colourful bathing boxes greet you as you wander along the beach to another scrubby path. A short walk through brings you out at Mills Beach Scenic Lookout on the Esplanade. Take in the views across to Melbourne and back to Mornington again.
Cross the Esplanade and walk up Herbert St. Be careful as there is no footpath here. Cross Barkly St and continue up Herbert St until you reach Strattons Lane. Follow the treed lane over the Tanti Creek at Stones Crossing. Turn right into Tanti Ave at the other end, then left into Vale St as you pass the Mornington Primary School. A right turn into Main St gets you to the top end of the shopping centre. Stop at one of the many restaurants or cafes for a well-earned meal. A short walk down Main St and you're back to where you started at the Old Court House Visitor Centre.
