Summary

This short walk combines some of the best things of Port Melbourne: playgrounds, parks, street art, restaurants and coffee bars, bay scenery and beach & the Spirit of Tasmania pier.

Description

If you arrive by the 109 tram, we start at Graham St. stop. There is also a shared path next to the tram line. Under the bridge a skate park is developed for Port Melbourne youth which is decorated by amazing graffiti.

From here we walk along the tennis court, with a funny little playground, to Garden City Reserve. A great place to play for kids, dogs and adults!
As we walk to Beacon cove, we come across the first lighthouse. On land? Yes! The Port Melbourne Lighthouses were built in 1924, and in conjunction guided ships by marking the center of the Port Melbourne Channel from Port Phillip Bay. The Beacons have been preserved as part of a new housing estate that has transformed the old industrial port area, originally built to guide ships into port.

From here we walk along Beacon Cove with lots of restaurants and cafe's if you want to take a break. It's also the departure point for the Spirit of Tasmania and a busy place when the boat just arrives of almost leaves.

A the end of the walk you can jump back on 109 tram or even walk along the foreshore to Fitzroy St Kilda ( about 5km or one hour walk) where there are a few tram options back to the city, or walk part of the way to Victoria Ave in Albert Park (2 km) and catch a tram.

5. Garden Reserve Beacon

The Port Melbourne Beacons were built in 1924 and to guide ships into port. They were preserved as part of a new housing estate.

6. Beacon Port Melbourne Channel

The tower used to show a fixed green light over a 26 degree sector, whilst a second green light every six seconds in the four degree sector marking the center of the Port Melbourne Channel.
