A pleasant walk to explore local treasures including Peppertree Place (a community garden), Hidden Creek Neighbourhood House, Coburg Lake, CERES market garden and the former Pentridge Prison!
1. Pepper Tree Place Community Nursery
The Community Nursery brings high quality, affordable plants to the backyards, schools and green spaces of Moreland and beyond. The Nursery is open on Wednesdays from 10 - 3pm, as well as on Swap Saturdays from 10 - 12noon (see below for Swap information).
The Café Cooperative and Coburg Edibles Swap are in full swing on the first Saturday every month, from 10am to 12 noon. Locals swap excess homegrown produce and gardening extras while the Cafe Cooperative brings quality baked goods, fresh coffee and seasonal creations to the community table.
2. Hidden Creek Neighbourhood House
Hidden Creek Neighbourhood House promotes community development by being a creative, nurturing, fertile place that welcomes everyone. We bring people together to share, talk, think, explore, learn, grow, play, work & create.
The Neighbourhood House offers a range of activities and services, ranging from exercise classes, craft making, mother's groups, playgroups, community support and much more.
3. Merri Creek Market Garden
This 2 ½ acre Merri Creek Market Garden is Melbourne's last surviving inner city market garden, having been farmed continuously by Chinese and Italian gardeners for over 150 years. In 2003 CERES began farming here under the guidance of Joe Garita whose father bought the land in the 1920?s.
Irrigation water is taken from the mains supply and a 100,000 litre underground water tank which collects rainwater from neighbouring town houses.
4. Public transport
This walk is accessible by public transport. Simply catch the train and hop off at Coburg station or catch Tram 19 and hop off at Bell Street to start your walk.
At the end of your walk, catch Bus 512 from the corner of Nicholson and Harding Street. This bus will take you back to Sydney Road or Coburg train station. Or, you can catch Tram 1 back into the city.

This is a beautiful community garden full of edible delights. The Monthly Edibles Swap, Cafe Cooperative and nursery are open on the first Sat each month 10 -12pm; the nursery on Weds from 10 -3pm.
The imposing bluestone walls are a reminder of the prison, now converted into a residential development. Take a walk through the area to get a glimpse of its past. Click link for detailed description.
An interesting contrast of colours. The brightly painted new houses and units are the complete opposite to the heavy and sombre blue stones of the former prison.
There are 3 playgrounds at Coburg Lake Reserve. This one features a rocketship with a fancy slide that kids would love. Endless hours of fun!
A lovely area to sit and look out to the lake. The wooden benches display some interesting etchings / graffiti messages from locals who have made their mark here.
This set of tables and chairs are perfect for an afternoon tea party. Nearby is a fantastic playground, complete with flying fox and super cool swings.
This outdoor gym is very popular. Try out these various contraptions and give yourself a little workout.

Yam Daisies are an an edible Indigenous plant. They have been planted here by the Merri & Edgars Creek Confluence Area Restoration Group. Look for the cluster of plantings south of Murray Road.
A lovely mosaic welcomes you to the House. Tucked behind the shops, the House offers courses and activities such as craft making, computer classes, women's groups and much more.
Come and see what's growing this season! This organic garden is managed by CERES and has a strong volunteer program and is used for horticultural training.
There is plenty of bird life on the lake. Swans, ducks, magpies are common. You might spot cormorants and swallows too. See link below for the type of birds that visit the lake.
Trugo is a game created by railway workers in the 1920s. In its heyday, Trugo clubs were found in many suburbs to the north and west of Melbourne. This one will be converted to a community garden.
Figs are plentiful during summer. It's great that these residents have left a bit of their tree overhanging to share with passers by, but please be respectful and don't take more than your fair share.

Plastic bags, drink bottle and various bit of rubbish continue to pollute the Creek. A good reminder to always dispose of our litter thoughtfully as they end up in waterways and affect local wildlife.
