This week's walk will be hot, dry and dusty. We will need to wear sunscreen and drink lots of water!

Points of Interest

1. W.A./N/T. border

As we cross the border from Western Australia into the Northern Territory we will have to throw out all our fruit, vegetables, nuts and honey to stop the spread of disease.

2. Katherine

Katherine began as an outpost of the Overland Telegraph Line on the North-South transport route between Darwin and Adelaide, Many tourists visit Katherine Gorge on the Katherine River.

3. Adelaide River

The town of Adelaide River was settled during the building of the Overland Telegragh Line. The river is full of enormous crocodiles - very dangerous!

4. Kakadu

Kakadu National Park is an Australian Natural Icon covers almost 20,000 square kms. Kakadu National Park is a World Heritage listed area that has been listed for it's cultural and natural heritage.

5. The Sacred Kingfisher

Although it is a species of kingfisher, Sacred Kingfishers seldom eat fish. Instead, they usually hunt mostly insects, but they will also eat a wide variety of other small animals.

6. Maningrida Football League

Australian Rules Football is very popular with the Aboriginal people. The Maningrida Football League is supported by the entire community.

7. Maningrida Airport

The airport at Maningrida has one runway and is a vital link to the rest of Australia.

8. Ramingining

Ramingining is an idyllic, culturally rich Indigenous community, 552 km east of Darwin, in the tropical forest on the edge of the Arafura Swamp. The lagoons and rivers are full of wildlife.

9. West Arnhem Land

This region is dominated by the Arnhem Escarpment, a vast range of rocky hills home to thousands of rock art galleries, some more than 30,000 years old.

10. Goyder River Crossing

The Central Arnhem Highway is a dirt road and 4WD vehicles are essential. Some of the river crossings are very dangerous. The river has many crocodiles.

11. Buffalo

Water buffalo are a huge problem in this part of Australia. The population is growing quickly and is damaging the environment.

12. Crocodiles

Wildlife is prolific throughout Arnhemland, and includes the region's largest predator – the saltwater crocodile.

13. Nhulunbuy

Nhulunbuy is a township that was created on the Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory of Australia when a bauxite mine and deep water port were established nearby in the late 1960s.

14. Boroloola

The rivers of this region have carved spectacular gorges through sandstone deposits. Boroloola has a population of 926.

15. Northern Territory/Queensland border

As is the case with other state and territory borders, many items of fruit and vegetables must be confiscated so diseases are not spread into neighbouring states.

16. Nicholson cattle station

Heytesbury Beef own a large number of cattle stations in northern Australia, Nicholson station is an unmanned outpost of this company.

17. Gulf of Carpentaria

The Gulf of Carpentaria is a large, shallow sea enclosed on three sides by northern Australia and bounded on the north by the Arafura Sea.

18. Mutton Hole Wetlands

The Mutton Hole Wetlands is a great place to see wildlife, but there are many crocodiles lurking under the surface!

19. Weipa

Weipa is the largest town on the Gulf of Carpentaria coast of the Cape York Peninsula . It has a population of 3,334. It is the site of the world's larggest bauxite mine.

20. Cape Melville National Park

The main features of this park are the rocky headlands of Cape Melville, granite boulders of the Melville Range and beaches of Bathurst Bay.

21. Lakeland

Lakeland is a recent settlement, built to service the agricultural activities in Laura Valley. It features two petrol stations!

22. Daintree National Park

The Daintree Rainforest is believed to be one of the three oldest in the world with unique plants and animals found nowhere else, a great place for bird-watchers and nature-lovers.

23. Great Barrier Reef

Wangetti is a small coastal town. opposite The Great Barrier Reef, which is more than 2,000 kilometres along the Queensland coastline. Snorkel, scuba dive or take a scenic flight over the reef.

24. Cairns

Cairns was founded in 1876 and is a popular tourist destination because of its tropical climate and access to the Great Barrier Reef, one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
