Description

Find out more

There are so many walks to do within the 54.5 square kilometre reserve, but this loop walk not far from 'the Sanctuary' area incorporates wildlife and beautiful scenery, and is also manageable for most people. The Koala enclosure at the start of the walk is accessible for wheelchairs, however the rest of the walk is gravel and bumpy in parts. This route incorporates parts of the 'Koala path' and the 'Peppermint trail' on Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve's own walking map - available at its website.

Points of Interest

1. Koala enclosure

Tidbinbilla's koala enclosure recently became home to a new joey (born mid-2017). You can get a good view of the young koala and its mother here as they go about their day, eating and sleeping!

2. Brush-tailed Rock wallabies

Tidbinbilla runs several endangered species' breeding programs. They have had great success breeding the endangered Brush-tailed Rock wallaby. You're likely to see some here. We did!

3. Trail intersection

Take a right and continue on the 'Peppermint' trail (rather than taking the shorter 'Koala Path' loop back to the koala enclosure just yet.)

4. Beautiful eucalypt forest

You'll appreciate why this area of the nature reserve is called the Eucalypt Forest! There's nothing quite so Australian as walking through bush land with the boughs of eucalypt trees gently swaying.

5. Mountain Creek crossover

Pause a moment at the footbridge and listen to the creek rushing beneath your feet. You never know, you may spot a platypus!

6. Native grasses

As you head back toward the start point for the walk, you'll see just how beautiful Australia's native grasses can look when en masse.
