Mathias Track is an easy, pleasant walk that passes by the National Rhododendron Gardens and RJ Hamer Arboretum. It's a dog-friendly (on-leash) walk 3.5 km each way.
This is a beautiful walk popular with locals, particularly dog owners, horse riders and mountain bike riders because Mathias Road (now track) is closed to vehicles.
* Parts of Mathias Track border the Dandenong Ranges National Park - in which dogs are strictly not allowed. For this reason, dogs must be kept on-leash at all times. Please inform other dog owners of this if you see their dogs off leash. Refer to map (final photo on map).
There are small car parking areas at both the Silvan Road entry and Falls Road entries to Mathias track. We've opted to start this walk at the Silvan Road end, because it is a little quieter and because the Arboretum affords some beautiful scenery, particularly in Autumn months.
Please note that whille the track is quite well-made, it is not sealed and can become muddy after rain.
DOGS: Dog owners please note that this is a popular walk but dogs are only permitted on-lead. We have another Mathias Track walk that detours to the Old Olinda Golf Course, a popular place which features a medium-sized off-leash area.
You can start your walk here, a section of the track bordering the RJ Hamer Arboretum.
The Mathias Track is dog-friendly but dogs must be kept on leash to protect native fauna, flora and to keep them safe from horses and snakes!
Part of the reason this walk is so great is that it cuts through the RJ Hamer Arboretum, so you get a great display of trees from around the world. Look out for sings at the base of trees to ID them.
For a leash-free play with your dog you can follow the Sequoia Track here until it meets the Old Golf Course track. Then follow the Golf Course track north it meets back up with Mathias (point 5).
Choose your won adventure! If you'd like to head towards the Old Olinda Golf Course you can follow our other map (in link).
This entry to Mathias track is closer to the Olinda township and not far from the Dandenong Botanic Gardens. Look for the small car parking area.
Parts of Mathias Track border the Dandenong Ranges Nation Park. Dogs are not allowed in National Parks unless specified by Parks Victoria. They are not allowed in the DRNP. See map or link.
