Summary

Walk to Flagstaff Gardens which are a wonderful oasis in the heart of the city. With lots of shade, seats, drinking fountains and well maintained, wide paths.

Description

This 30 minute walk to, and around, Flagstaff Gardens has been created in thanks to Peter Gordon, the founding Chair of Victoria Walks.

The walk is designed for Peter and his staff at the Melbourne office of Gordon Legal to, quite simply, go for a walk! It is suitable for a daily constitutional, walking meeting, to clear the mind, get some green time or get the blood pumping and the mind going!

The Gardens are relatively small so you can follow this route and go around twice if you have more time, or make up your own circuit.

The Gardens contain extensive lawns with a variety of mature trees, flowerbeds and wild animals including possums. The southern end is characterised by deciduous trees, while the northern end contains mature eucalyptus. It also has avenues of elm trees providing shaded pathways on the warmer months.

The Gardens include a bowling lawn, rose beds, flower and shrub beds. Along William Street side there are tennis courts, which also double as volleyball, handball and netball courts. Electric barbecues nearby provide a popular site for office parties in December. Scattered about the lawns and gardens are memorials and sculptures that illuminate some of the social significance of the area.

Peter commenced as the Chair of Victoria Walks while on the Board of VicHealth. He has also been Chair or Director of many boards and committees including Australia Community Centre for Diabetes, McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer. Peter is one of Australia’s most prominent class action lawyers. He has an unrivalled record of fighting for justice for working people, and has conducted many history-making class action cases, as well as a large number of individual actions. He established Gordon Legal to provide an unprecedented legal service to those who need it most. Peter is also the President of the Western Bulldogs, which reflects his commitment to the community, his love of football and his desire to champion the underdog. Peter was made a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia for his services to the community particularly Australian Rules Football, health promotion, youth social welfare and the law.
