A short but tranquil loop walk along Westbreen Creek in Pascoe Vale for a dose of nature in suburbia.
A short but tranquil loop walk along Westbreen Creek in Pascoe Vale for a dose of nature in suburbia.
Pascoe Vale has a lovely slice of bushland along the Westbreen Creek corridor. It's a great place for a tranquil walk in nature. A new path makes it possible to walk a loop and take in both sides of the creek. Revegetation and wetland restoration have created important habitats that are home to a huge array of flora and fauna.
Bush birds you might spot in the trees include Scarlet Robins, Grey Butcherbirds and Common Bronzewing. Waterbirds seen along the creek include herons, cormorants, ibis and wood ducks. The creek has a healthy frog population too. Species found here include the Growling Grass Frog and Pobblebonk Frog.
But it hasn't always been this way. Westbreen Creek is a tributary of Moonee Ponds Creek. It was neglected for many decades and turned into an underground drain in the 1970s. Decades of restoration work have made sections of the creek attractive urban parkland with important habitats for wildlife. Friends of Moonee Ponds Creek work to protect and enhance Westbreen Creek and welcome new members.
This walk begins and ends at the new Northumberland Road wetland and travels through the linear parkland of Gavin Reserve to KW Joyce Reserve then loops back.
Accessible public toilets are located at the start of this walk. Barbeques, seating, and drinking water are available close to the wetland too.
Please keep dogs on a leash at all times. Dogs can enjoy an off-leash run in the KW Joyce Reserve Dog Off-Leash Area.
To reach this walk from Pascoe Vale Train Station, walk up Railway Parade to Westbreen Creek Path. It is approximately a 9-minute walk to the starting point of this map.
