Don't simply pass through the small beach top town of Kilcunda! You will be missing a walk with fantastic views of spectacular local beaches as well as across Bass Strait to Phillip Island.
This 60 - 90 minute walk travels Kilcunda Coastal Reserve to the historic Bourne Creek Trestle Railway Bridge where it meets Kilcunda Surf Beach, then above and along Kilcunda and Shelley Beaches and back . The bluffs are rugged weather beaten promontories covered in tough coastal vegetation. All beaches have sandy expanses at low tide. There are extensive rocky platforms that are fascinating to explore. The beaches are popular with surf fishers. Note: high tide may cover the whole beach. Swimming at these beaches is risky.
The path begins by following the Bass Coast Rail Trail before joining up with the George Bass Coastal Walk and returning via the beachfronts. If this length isn't enough for you there is plenty more nearby walking that can be done! See the "Other walks .... " links below.
The route is either compacted granitic sand, grassy ways or sandy underfoot. Seats are provided at intervals. There are also boardwalks and steps.
Kilcunda Foreshore Reserve provides picnic tables, a BBQ shelter, drinking water, information signage, a playground and public toilets. There is a Hotel and store opposite on Bass Highway for refreshment.
Dogs are permitted on leash at all times on Kilcunda Beaches. A designated off leash area is available in front go the Kilcunda Beach Caravan Park.
Car parking
The walk starts at the Kilcunda Foreshore Reserve car park. It has plenty of room.
Cyclists share the Bass Coast Rail Trail.

Cape Woolamai is prominent on the horizon from the cliff top above Kilcunda Beach.
This historic and picturesque trestle bridge carried trains across Bourne Creek from 1911 to 1978. Don't forget you camera/phone.
First walk the Rail Trail east to the Trestle Bridge, then return past the Caravan Park. After the last cabin, turn left down the grassy path toward the cliffs. Follow it along the cliff top.
A small bridge over a wet gully sees the path briefly narrow.
Seating is occasional along the walk. If you need a rest from time to time it is a good idea to do so when the opportunity presents.
The return point for the walk as mapped is the small footbridge after Shelley Beach. However, you can continue along the George Bass Coastal Walk to San Remo if you wish!
There are steps down from Shelley Beach car park to the beach. Several flights of steps in the cliffs take you to and from the different beaches.
With a lovely strip of sand and many rock pools, this beach is a beach combers paradise.
Kilcunda Beach west is the area in front of the Caravan Park that is available for off leash dog walking.
The BBQ shelter sits atop the cliffs in the Foreshore Reserve. There are inside and outside picnic tables and public toilets.
