Description

Pop into the Visitor Information Centre before you start. There is a brochure available containing more information on each historic site.

There is car parking outside of the Visitor Information Centre.

Toilets are located at Lions Park and outside the Visitor Information Centre.

Points of Interest

1. Old Court House

Now home to the Visitor Information Centre and Art Gallery, the old Court House was built in 1864 at a cost of 783 pounds with additions in 1885-1886 and 1916.

2. Log Cabin Lockup

Originally built near the Goulburn River in 1853. In 1865 it was moved to the site of the Police Station until 1962. It was re-erected in Kings Park, then relocated to its present site in 1994.

3. Old Goulburn Hotel (58 Emily Street)

This hotel operated from the late 1860's until 1911 when it was de-licensed. It has been used for a range of different businesses since then.

4. First Post Office Building (50 Emily Street)

The Post Office was built in 1872 and remained so until 1911 when a new Post Office was built in Station Street.

5. The Prince Hotel (48 Emily Street)

Originally built in 1863 and known as the Prince of Wales Hotel, it was first occupied by Mr Vanzuilicom who had conducted the Old Seymour Hotel on the other side of the river.

6. Site of Canadian/Town and Country Hotel (38 Emily Street)

This site was first occupied from the 1840's by Peter Tiernan's original store and bakery. It then became a hotel before being demolished in 2006.

7. Perron's Assembly Hall Facade (36 Emily Street)

Only the facade remains of this building which was once the centre of Seymour's entertainment and cultural life from 1872. It was here that the first animated pictures were shown in 1901.

8. Bank of Victoria (32 Emily Street)

This building was the State Bank of Victoria from 1872 to 1934, the original bank vault is still inside. Now used for short term accommodation.

9. First Shire Hall (30 Emily Street)

Now a private residence, this hall was built in 1872 and served as a meeting place for the Seymour Shire. In 1828 the Shire moved to Federal Hall in Station Street.

10. Royal Hotel (26 Emily Street)

In 1848 John Clark built the back portion of this Hotel from locally quarried stone. It was added to in 1852 and again in the 1890's.

11. Old Church of England Rectory (36 Emily Street)

The Rectory, now privately owned, still stands behind the service station. The rear was much extended for war time flats and rooms.

12. Site of Old Methodist Parsonage (41 Emily Street)

Built in the 1860's, the old Parsonage is now the site of McDonalds.

13. The Pioneer Library

Built in 1875 as a free library, additions were opened in 1889. Now home to the Seymour and District Historical Society Inc.

14. Kings Park

Works commenced in 1905 to construct this park and showgrounds.

15. Seymour State School

Constructed in 1860, used as part of Seymour State School until 1972. This site has have several educational uses since.

16. O'Callaghan's Store (56 Tallarook Street)

Ran as a furniture shop and newsagency in the building from the 1890's. In later years it has been operated as a cafe, furniture store, clothing store and car accessories store.

17. New Court House

The New Court House was opened in May 1973 to replace the Court House in Emily Street, which is now the home of the Visitor Information Centre and Art Gallery.
