The Long Walk Fun Walk is part of the tenth anniversary celebrations of the first Long Walk by Michael Long and others to support the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It will commence at 10.30am at Tom's Block - the Tan on Saturday 31 May 2014, and will travel around the Royal Botanic Gardens.
The Gardens contain many plants and sites of Indigenous cultural significance which can be experienced during the walk. These include the Australian Forest Walk, native Eucalypts, the Lions Head and Separation trees, Lower Yarra River Habitat, Long Island and the traditional Smoking Ceremony.
The Long Walk began in 2004 when former Essendon player Michael Long and others walked from Melbourne to Canberra to ask the Prime Minister to put the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people back on the national agenda. The Long Walk Fun Walk aims to raise valuable funds for the charity's education and cultural exchange programs.
It will be followed by a free Wellbeing concert at 12pm at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl featuring the Australian artists Dan Sultan, Casey Donovan, Urthboy, Radical Son, Ellie Lovegrove, Maupower and the Bunjil Music Business Project Artists.
