The is a fabulous Melbourne day out walk for children as there is lots of room for them to run wild and to explore.

Visit the Fairies Tree, Tudor Village, Cook's Cottage and the peaceful, curated gardens.

If a city worker, this is also a fabulous walk to fit some physical activity into your day, and reinvigorate ahead of the afternoon slog! Take a colleague and make it social or turn your walk into a walking meeting with a beautiful backdrop.

Walking meetings are not only a good way of getting exercise, they're a great way to solve problems, come up with ideas and to reach consensus on issues.

A good walk gets the blood running and the creative juices flowing!

Points of Interest

1. City start

Start at Treasury Gardens at the statue of William John Clarke near Spring St.

2. Path to Fitzroy Gardens

Already city noises start to fade into the distance. There are lots of seats along here, and along the whole walk. Listen for birds.

3. The gentle incline to the Fountain

Once you cross Lansdowne St, get the blood pumping and pick up the pace along this gentle incline to the River God Fountain.

4. River God Fountain

There is something wonderful about the sound of the water at this fountain. Take a moment to pause and look back down the Gardens.

5. Grey Street Fountain

This brilliant fountain and flower garden is about halfway.

6. The Rotunda

The Rotunda was built in 1873 and is one of a few along the walk that can provide shelter during inclement weather.

7. Mini Tudor Village

This model village was carved by a pensioner in England and sent to Melbourne as a gift in the 1940s. Please remain outside the fence.

8. Fairies Tree

Artist Ola Cohn carved this lovely work into one of the garden's original red gums in the early 1930s. Take a closer look, all is not always well in fairy land!

9. Curated gardens

Take time today or another day to explore some of the little gardens that branch off the main paths in this area.

10. Captain Cook's Cottage

Cooks' Cottage is on the left. Built in England in 1755 and said to be the oldest building in Australia, it was brought to Melbourne in 1934.

11. The Conservatory

This stunning building houses stunning floral displays throughout the year and is free to enter. We saw this Wattle Bird enjoying the nectar in summer!
