Stroll around the Geelong Botanic Gardens enjoying the transition from 21st Century to Heritage Gardens.
The Geelong Botanic Gardens takes up a small part of Eastern Park, which was put aside for development as a garden in 1851. Start at the entrance in Eastern Park Circuit. ‘The 21st Century Garden highlights the role of modern botanic gardens to promote education, conservation and sustainability.’ Pass through the fancy wrought gates to the older Heritage Gardens with its Rose Garden Lawn, Fernery, Traill fountain and urns. The gardens boast a sculpture of storks that were brought out from Japan in the 1880s and also a ginkgo biloba tree from 1859 that is classified by the National trust. Geelong’s tiny first Customs House from 1838 also rests at the back of the gardens. There is also a Tea House near the fern garden open from 11am to 3pm. The gardens are open from 7.30am to 7pm in Daylight Savings hours.
