This easy short loop walk is definitely worth a visit. It includes a varied landscape and vegetation in a short distance.

The first section has some ancient angophoras, stringy barks and bloodwoods as well as pittosporum, wattles and mellaleuca. There are lots of ground cover species so the environment provides habitat for many species of birds, the chorus and calls are a joy to hear.

Once you cross the Betka Road the vegetation changes to becomes more coastal. The short detours to viewing platforms are really worth taking as they offer spectacular ocean views (watch out for dolphins and whales in particular).

If the weather is agreeable, planning a picnic or swim at Betka River or beach is worth considering.

Points of Interest

1. The start

The start of this loop walk is across from the Betka River picnic area and carpark and is easy to find.

2. Betka River

The first part of the walk followers around the Betka River but doesn't go down to the bank, you see it through the trees.

3. Shady path

The first section if the walk is an inviting shady path.

4. Big trees

There are pretty impressive larger trees on the Betka River side of the walk.

5. Road crossing

The road crossing is clearly marked and it' easy to see any oncoming vehicles.

6. After the bushfires

You really get a sense of how devastating 2020 bushfires were when you walk through some sections, but nice to see the understory regenerating.

7. Detour to lookouts

The five minute detour to the lookouts is really worth doing.

8. First lookout

You can see Bastion Point and even the Gabo Island lighthouse from this lookout. In the cooler months you might see a migrating Humpback Whale.

9. Second lookout

You can see around the coast to Quarry Beach and beyond. We saw two seals lolling about in the kelp directly in front of the platform but too far away for a good photo.

10. A popular path

The path is part of the Mallacoota Coastal Walk that goes from the township all the way to Pebbly Beach.

11. Seat with a view

Good spot to sit and look down to the beach through trees.

12. Kangaroo Apple

Keep an eye out for wildflowers or flowering trees such as this Kangaroo Apple (see link).

13. Betka River and beach

The path meanders down to the mouth of the Betka River and a relatively safe and quiet, unpatrolled beach however there are numerous rocks in the water.
