With tourists and fitness fanatics on bikes rushing past, rail trails are not every walkers cup of tea.
But this neat 6km stretch, the first stage of the of the poplar Murray to Mountain Rail Trail, is popular with walkers too, with plenty of spots to stop and nice views from the river and valley up to surrounding mountains to enjoy.
While running close to the main highway, the track is sealed and separated from the road so does not feel unsafe.
It is feasible to make this a 12km there-and-back day walk - stopping for lunch in one of the towns (obviously you can start from either the Bright or Porepunkah ends of this rail trail leg).
A popular place to stop for a bite to eat is the Rail Trail cafe as you enter the town of Porepunkah, but there is a pub over the road too.

Early morning is a good time to walk the rail trail with the light on nearby mountains just lovely. This is the view looking back to Bright.
More experienced cyclists sometime prefer to cycle on the road, and leave the trail to slower-moving folk.
The trail gets busier as you get close to Porepunkah. This little riverside town in the shadows of Mt Buffalo is very popular with families camping over the warmer months.
Take care on this section as there is not a lot of passing space on the sealed track. Most people are friendly though!
This is clearly a popular place to stop for a coffee and / or a bit to eat. There are a couple of other options further along on the main drag.
Take a rest at Riverside Park and enjoy a view to Mount Buffalo from the side of the river.
