Summary

Three students Faith, Alexander, and Dylan went for a walk throughout the Salisbury East neighbourhood to look at positive and negative features of our suburb.

Description

Our walk throughout the Salisbury East neighbourhood took approximately 1 hour to walk 2.67 km. We exited our school and walked straight up London Drive. We then turned onto Sunhill Street and then right onto Gloucester Avenue. We walked past the Deli/shops and past Salisbury East High School. We turned right onto Smith Road and followed the busy road until we reached Main North Road. We crossed at the lights and then continued down the other side of Smith Road, turning left onto Gloucester Avenue. We continued up the street and headed back to Tyndale Christian School. On our walk we took photos of positive and negative features of the Salisbury East area. Some of these photos were of bus stops, graffiti, cracked paths, litter, intersections, traffic lights, street signs etc.

Points of Interest

1. Council Collection Rubbish Bin

There are lots of bins located along the street although they are only council collection bins. There should be council bins along the street so people can have access to bins all week long.

2. Lighting, street signs, bin and intersection

This photo has many positive things that help our suburb. There is a bin located in a busy area, lighting for people at night-time, clear street signs and signs locating the intersection ahead.

3. Trees

Trees are located right in front of Salisbury East High School. This makes the landscaping more attractive and provides shade for pedestrians on hot days.

4. Shops, deli, phonebooth and post box

There is a deli/shops located in an easily accessible area near schools and houses. This is great for people who don't have access to transport as this is in an area with not many shops.

5. 'Dogs on leash' sign

This sign is located at Davey Park Oval, Salisbury East. It is clear to all pet-owners and pedestrians what the rules they must follow are.

6. Bin

There is a bin located right next to the bus stop and oval which makes it easy for pedestrians to access when they need to put something in the bin.

7. No path for cyclists

Cyclists do not have their own pathway to ride on. This is a safety hazard as pedestrians may not see the cyclist and this could cause an accident.

8. Street Lights

There are many street lights throughout the area which is a great way to make pedestrians feel safe at night time.

9. Traffic Intersection

This is a fantastic area to have an intersection as many cars travel on these streets. Also they have a pedestrian crossing so people and students can cross the street safely.

10. Cracked driveway

This is a safety hazard because pedestrians can trip over it. This needs to be fixed up by the Salisbury Council.

11. Litter

All along Smith Road there is litter beside the pathway. This could be prevented if there were more bins along the road and if people decided not to be lazy.

12. Speeding Drivers

Some oncoming drivers are not abiding by the speed limits and this is a danger to all people surrounding them.

13. Main Road Signs

There is a sign that locates what direction the main streets are far before drivers need to turn so they can change lanes if they need.

14. Graffiti on bus stops

There is graffiti on bus stops, fences, pathways and buildings all around the Salisbury area which makes the town look tacky and unsafe.

15. Main Road Intersection

There is a main road intersection with pedestrian crossings and traffic lights. It also has an island in the middle of the road for pedestrians to wait at.

16. Glass on pathway

On the pathway we found smashed glass which is bad for the environment and dangerous to pedestrians.

17. Speed limit signs

There were many speed limit signs along Smith Road clearly indicating what the speed limit was. We believe this speed limit is appropriate for the busy road.

18. Bus stop

The council have put in new bus stops in busy areas that need them.

19. Give way and street signs

These signs are clear for all drivers and pedestrians to see. They also help you locate where certain places/shops are.

20. Cracked/Uneven paths

This cracked/uneven path is dangerous to all pedestrians as you can easily trip.

21. Cracked cement

There is cracked cement surrounding this huge tree that makes it unattractive and unpleasant to walk around.

22. Crossing button

Crossing buttons show pedestrians, blind or deaf, when to cross the street.
