Start at the back of Melbourne Legacy in Drewery Lane. Take special note of the colourful clay tiles and mosaic plaque on the back wall of Legacy House. The Legacy StreetArt Mural Project is an art installation created by members of the Legacy family to celebrate the Centenary of ANZAC. Next to the art installation is a massive graffitied picture of a dragon. Also in Drewery Lane is Baroq House, which has an enormous white sculpture of two entwined figures attached to the building.
Walk to the Lt Lonsdale St end of Drewery Lane and turn left, continue under the Melbourne Central walkway to the corner of Elizabeth St. St Francis Church, Melbourne’s first Catholic cathedral, sits here.
Just past Elizabeth St lies the Thousand Pound Bend café, formerly a garage. It looks a bit grungy on the outside but good food and coffee can be found within. On the opposite side of Lt Lonsdale St sits Phillips Shirts, a family business that has been making shirts for over 60 years.
At the corner of William and Lt Lonsdale Sts are the former Victorian Titles Office (283 Queen St) and former Records Office (295 Queen St). Both are now campuses for Victoria University.
The former buildings for the Women’s Venereal Disease and adjacent TB Clinic sit at 364-378 Lt Lonsdale St. The Children’s Court of Victoria is another notable building at 477 Lt Lonsdale St.
Turn right into William St where you will pass the grand old Royal Mint building. It is now the Hellenic Museum.
Cross William and Lonsdale Sts and enter the Flagstaff Gardens just past the entrance to Flagstaff Gardens loop station. The park is named for the flagstaff erected here in 1840. Immediately you enter the green grass and peacefully swaying trees envelope you to relax and soothe any worries away. Spend a bit of time looking around to discover the caretaker’s residence, tennis courts, children’s playground and bowling club.
The return journey along Lonsdale St encompasses Melbourne’s legal district. Walk back along William St, past the old mint and over Lt Lonsdale St. Turn left into Lonsdale St where the County and Supreme Courts stand opposite each other. At the entrance to the County Court ‘The Lady of Justice’ sculpture by William Eicholtz sits above the entrance to the building. The historic Supreme Court on the block bounded by Lonsdale, William and Lt Bourke Sts was built between 1874 and 1882 and is still in use.
Next to the County Court is a 3-storey building formerly known as Waverley Court at 470 Lonsdale St.
Continue past the Vic Uni campus at the corner of 247-283 Queen St (seen already from Lt Lonsdale St).
Continue along Lonsdale St past the front of St Francis Church and Emporium shopping complex and back into Drewery Lane to the start.
