The attractive township of Walwa is the perfect place for a relaxing walk. The town is rich with rural charm and the Murray is a short kilometre away offering river delights.
Known for the pleasures of walking, boating, fishing and generally taking it easy, Walwa is a place to gladden the heart. The lush pastures and big hills of this part of the Upper Murray never cease to satisfy.
Settlement had begun in the area by 1837, the postal service was delivering by the 1860s and the town site was surveyed by 1870. Tin brought miners in the 1880s. Dairy and grazing became the backbone of the local economy. Much of the town was destroyed in the devastating 1939 bushfires and then rebuilt in style.
Services include accomodation, food and drink, mechanical repairs, fuel and public toilets. Other amenities include picnic tables, bins, refreshments, historical buildings, an art gallery and small playground. The riverside offers a caravan park, picnic tables, a boat ramp and fish cleaning facility. There are plenty of reasons for staying a while. The town is a gateway to the wonderful Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park.
Anyone can experience this walk. Children will enjoy discovering the gnomish population occupying the foliage of garden beds throughout the Main Street.

The River Road goes straight ahead directly to the river from town. Towong Shire Council has constructed a dedicated, sealed and clearly marked walking path beside the road.
The are picnic tables right next to the river at its confluence with Sandy Creek.
The Upper Murray is renowned for its catches of Trout and Cod. If part of your walk or stay includes plans for a spot of fishing you are well catered for.
Whether abandoned, still hanging on or on the renovators to do list, discovering and observing old cars is a fun pastime in rural settings.
The building is a 1920s period classic that sets the tone for exploring the rest of the Main Street.
This cute public space has public toilets, a small playground, picnic table and interesting signage about the township.
Dedicated in 1949, the Hall and monument on this site commemorate Walwa residents who fought in both World Wars.
Don't miss visiting the Walwa General Store. The building sits perfectly with the period character of the Main Street and inside it does even better. There are numerous artefacts to examine and buy.
Part of the Presbytery of North East Victoria, this church functions in conjunction with the Corryong Uniting Church. Note the historic building out the back.
Christ the King Catholic church on Shelley Road was constructed in 1932.
The Tardis like Walwa Book Exchange is always worth a look. Open the door to see exactly what's inside. There may even be a Dr Who!
Also home to the local Medical Centre and Credit Union, this facility is worth knowing about.
The passing of a Walwa resident left many local gnomes without a home. In a mass migration, they appear to have set up residence in the Main Street. Kids will love playing spot the gnome.
