Summary

Our school project was to take photos of good aspects and bad aspects to see how walk-able our school neighbor hood was. We did an audit of our school area and found some pretty surprising things.

Description

We brought in cameras to take pictures of the good and bad aspects of our neighbor hood. We tested safety, walk ability and recreational uses of our area. We checked that the footpaths were even and smooth. We checked that there is signs in the right places and that there is enough crossings for pedestrians. The traffic lights were working and the cars were being safe. We walked to the oval to check the buildings and the playground. We checked the deli to find the closed shops were a bit unfriendly and the signs worn out. The shops that were open though seemed to be colorful and busy. We saw a post box and a telephone box, perfect for a small community. We went down to the end of Gloucester Ave. to see the crossing lights were in perfect condition. Overall, this walk has opened our eyes of how we can improve our walk ability.

1. Traffic Lights

The traffic lights make sure that the cars can not harm any other cars or pedestrians. The lights help people drive safely so we can avoid casualties, traffic lights are a machine that helps safety.

2. Cross Walk

The cross walk helps people cross safely and show a clear indication that pedestrians will be crossing and for cars to be careful. They can be dangerous as some cars might be too close but still safe

3. Graffiti On Dangerous Things

Graffiti on such things like this can cause a lot of problems. For example there could be graffiti on a gas objects or something flammable and the paint could seep in or the fumes might cause damage.

4. Surfaced Footpath

A surfaced footpath is a hazard due to people can trip and wheel chairs could stumble and shake the passenger out. when people trip over such things they will have injuries like a graze or cut.

5. Tree Roots

These tree roots have pulled up some of the footpath and is a tripping hazard. People should be able to walk happily in their neighbor hood without jumping over roots, which are overgrown.

6. Bus stop

This bus stop is good because it has seats as well as shade while you're waiting for the bus. We think that there should be more benches for people to sit and have a chat around their neighbor hood

7. Litter

We were disappointed to find so much litter including cans and wrappers. There should be more bins scattered around for things like these.

8. Lamp Post

This lamp post was good for the night drivers and pedestrians. It guides the cars through the streets with it's bright light.

9. One-Sided Footpath

The whole residential street only has a footpath on the right side. We had to walk on one narrow path with all the wasted garden space.

10. Flat Ramp

This street ramp is flat and smooth. Perfect for wheelchairs, the elderly and prams. Most ramps have a steep drop and are cracked but this one is an exception.

11. Exposed Wire

There is a large, rusty wire wrapped around a power line post. It is a danger for passer-byes as they could come along and scrape themselves and possibly get infections.

12. No Bike Lanes or Crossing

This road has no bike lanes or crossings for those keen pedestrians. The road is only available for cars to drive on. Kids with their bikes would have to ride on the dangerous road.

13. Graffiti

The nerve of some people to ruin the beauty of a lovely community by writing unintelligible words on other peoples property. We should have the "artist" come and clean it up.

14. New Road

This particular section of Gloucester Ave. is clean, clear and smooth. This road shall not be making any flat tires or bumpy rides. It is a good road for cars and trucks.

15. Post Box

There is a post box here for the neighborhood to use. It is located outside of the deli. It is useful for the residents around the area in case they need to post something without driving far away.

16. Phone Box

This phone box is located so that everyone can find it easily in an emergency. For people who are in need of help they can quickly get to the box and call for help.

17. Closed-Up Shops

These shops give the deli an eerie, threatening feel. They need new shops to make the deli even more convenient.

18. Open Shops

Open shops create a comforting feeling as well as being able to supply needs for people who pass-by.

19. Disgusting And Small Footpaths

In the trees above are bird nests which leads to having droppings on the footpath. as well as that the footpath is not wide enough for wheelchair access.

20. Holes In Person's Fence

The hole in the person's fence is a hazard due to the hole creating a a sharp edge that may cut others and cause harm.

21. Dogs

People in the neighborhood have dogs and it is a good sign showing that the people are active by taking their dogs on walks.

22. Surfaced Bricks

Some Bricks have been removed from the footpath and cause hazard as someone could trip as well as it can be classified as litter or more so rubbish. The bricks were discarded when they were removed.

23. School Zone Sign

This sign indicates that there's school zone and to slow down as students may be there and should be more careful. The sign helps children as they know they're more safe than in a public road area.

24. Public Green Oval

This oval is for public use and is kept in mid condition so the public can enjoy it with their family as well as their dogs. Schools even use it for some of their functions like soccer mini comps.

25. Soccer Club

The soccer club is good for the community as the kids can express themselves through what they desire and their hobbies. The club lets kids to play soccer and get them to be more active and have fun!

26. Playground

There is a playground for the children and their families to play on, this encourages family time. It can serve as an important role in families as they can use the parents free time with their kids.

27. Bench

It gives adults a place to sit while watching their children play on the playground. It's close the the playground so the parents aren't far away from their children.

28. Fence

The fence keeps the equipment inside the area and the children will not wander out of their parents reach. the fence keeps the good things in and the bad out such as dogs that may be harmful and mean.

29. Giant Fallen Branch

A fallen branch is a hazard because it could fall on someone or break when someone is playing on it. It may damage the house right near the tree and can cause many problems later such as falling apart

30. Dog Waste Bags

These bags help the community by not leaving waste lying around where people could step in it. The owners take part of the blame and they have to clean up their own dogs waste not anyone else.

31. Over Growing Grass And Weeds

The overgrown grass is a hazard because a passersby might be allergic and have a serious reaction & the council's at fault because of them leaving it there.The weeds can also irritate others and dogs.
