Description

Hastings is a Mornington Peninsula suburb situated on the gorgeous Western Port Bay. A quiet town, this walk encompasses all the best parts (and the best views!) Fitness fanatics will love the free fitness stations, dogs will go crazy for the expansive leash-free area, nature lovers will adore the flora and fauna and everyone will enjoy the views!

This circuit walk takes you along a mix of accessible surfaces (rustic dirt tracks and the boardwalk) both with picturesque views overlooking Western Port Bay. In recent years Hastings has grown in popularity, which is evident in the mix of modern facilities and historical interest features. This walk is suitable for people wanting an hour-long walk or can even be expanded into a day trip to include other facilities you pass along the way: BBQ areas, an indoor heated pool, tennis courts, basketball courts and a waterfront café!

Have fun stopping and trying out each of the fitness stations (as both my partner and I did) which all come with instructions on how to best use the equipment. If you are seriously tech savvy there is even a free app you can download for extra tips and video tutorials.

Once you have worn yourself out, have a wander up the Hastings pier which is a popular spot for fishing as well as feeding the abundance of pelicans you will see hear on nice days (hence the name ‘Pelican Park’). If you’re getting peckish, at the beginning of the pier there is a great café called Pelikan Societe, with both indoor and outdoor undercover seating, a delicious menu, super friendly staff members and beautiful views of the pier, boats and the bay!

Before you leave don’t forget to stop by the impressive Pelican Park Playground – a favourite for both kids and adults alike - and if you’re really adventurous this playground is situated right next to a modern skate park.

If all of the exploring this walk has to offer hasn’t worn you out then there’s always Hastings High Street, encompassing an array of quirky shops, complexes and cafes. Enjoy!

Notes:
- The leash free area includes the oval only, the footpaths are all on-lead. Also, please be aware that this leash free area is not fenced so it is important to have control of your dog(s) at all times.
- Please do not let your children or dogs into the salt marsh or mangroves as this disturbs the environment and bird life.

Points of Interest

1. Leash-Free Area

This walk has an enormous leash free in the middle of the oval. Please note that the pathway is a shared path (with cyclists) and therefore is not leash free. Additionally, this area is not fenced.

2. Beginning of the boardwalk

This bridge marks the beginning of the boardwalk section of this walk, taking you through salt marsh and mangrove swamps (and don't forget about the bird life!)

3. Jack Babington Park

This playground marks the half way point of this walk, including the playground itself, a BBQ area, a sitting area as well as a Werner Compressor (see the next POI).

4. Werner Compressor

This Werner Compressor has historical significance for the Western Port area. During the 1914-18 war, this compressor was used for cold storage of fruit by locals in Somerville until 1970.

5. Mangroves and Salt Marsh

Surround yourself with this calming atmosphere as you wander amongst the salt marsh and mangroves

6. Fitness Stations

How do you make working out more fun? Make it free and with a beautiful view! Each station has instructions on how to use the equipment and there is a free app you can download for tutorials.
