A gorgeous walk down through a Eucalypt forest to the two-tiered Rollasons Falls and swim hole on beautiful Mount Buffalo.
If you like to combine a walk with a swim this track a little way up Mount Buffalo is a a great way to spend an hour or two if you're in Victoria's Alpine region during the warmer months (but remember the 2km walk back up is more tiring than the walk down!)
The walk down to the falls is a pretty one as you make your way along a track through a nicely shaded forest, sporting a variety of mature Eucalypt trees and vibrant understory.
The route begins to steepen about halfway down to the falls, and the terrain gets trickier as you approach the junction advertising the paths to the Upper and Lower falls (each about 400m-return from this point).
The Upper Falls gently tumble over exposed rockface (a peaceful place to sit and rest for awhile).
The Lower Falls are more visually spectacular as they splash down from a height into one small pool and then again down into a welcoming and popular swim hole on the Buffalo Creek.
The Lower Falls can get busy over holiday periods in summer. The first half of the walk back up from the Falls' junction point to the picnic ground can feel hard-going on a hot day. Allow about 30-40 minutes for the walk back up (depending on your fitness and energy levels).
NOTES
- There are no toilets at the picnic ground / car park (or at the Falls)
- Take all due care when admiring the Upper and Lower Falls, as the track and rock surfaces are obviously slippery when wet
- Children should be supervised at all times on this walk / swim
- If swimming take care when entering the water and no diving
- As this walk is located in Mount Buffalo National Park, DOGS ARE NOT ALLOWED
If you like a longer walk Bushwalking Victoria describe a 12km walk from the base of Buffalo to the falls.

The Rollasons Falls picnic area is about halfway up Mt Buffalo
You'll find most of the walk is shaded by lovely mountain gums with a lovely, vibrant green bracken understory.
Head left to Upper Falls first or straight to the Lower Falls. Each is 200m one way from this point. Take note of the warnings.
If you're walking in spring or summer look out for many different native flowering species, such as these Everlasting Daisies.
Mind your footing if you want to get down for a closer view as you'll need to do a bit of rock scrambling from the track.
A pretty, peaceful place to sit and rest.
It can be a popular spot on warm days, the walk down and back notwithstanding!
If you're an experienced swimmer you can spend some time cooling off in the lower, larger pool here. Never swim alone.
Must go back up!
The swim might be over but that doesn't mean there isn't more to enjoy as you make your way back to the picnic area. The early-evening light is beautiful in summer.
