Description

Find out more

The wetlands walk is one part of a series of tracks linking up to a more ambitious track that goes right around the town, the 9.5km Nowa Nowa walk.

This return walk is a great way to whet your appetite though, and there is a shorter, all-abilities option for those who don't want to walk the whole 3km walk depicted on our map.

Begin the Wetlands Walk at the lake's edge, near the bottom of the Mingling Waters Caravan Park.

The first part of the walk, which is nice and level, traces the swampy, reedy shoreline of Lake Tyers, with lots of lovely views over the water. The light in the early morning or evening is very pretty indeed. It's a popular place for recreational fishing too and we spotted plenty of birdlife.

Those who wish to continue all the way to the picnic table (turnaround point) will wind along a bushier track, which is steep in parts. The picnic table had been completely destroyed when we visited, but we still found a nice spot to sit and watch fishing jumping in the golden dusk.

This is a tranquil walk, and you may find you have the whole track to yourself. Make sure you still have plenty of light for your return walk if venturing out in the late afternoon as the sun can fade fast.

Parts of the walk are not well maintained, with some wayfinding signage due for replacement.

Download a map of Nowa Nowa's walks here or see the final Point of Interest on our map (#10) to see the other tracks.

Back at the car park you may wish to try the Sculpture walk, which heads in the opposite direction to the Wetlands walk along the lake's edge.

Points of Interest

1. Start point

There is a large, open area here where you can park if you arrived by vehicle. Head toward the jetty you see in this image.

2. All-abilities, bird-viewing track

The first 400m of the walk has been levelled out to ensure everyone can access it. The thick reeds by lake's edge provide lots of hiding places for ducks, swans and other birdlife.

3. Delightful shoreline

You can see why many people love to come here for a spot of quiet fishing or a peaceful walk.

4. Cross the bridge

After crossing the bridge you'll see more Wetlands walk signage to help you on your way.

5. Tranquility

Plenty of places to sit and have a think on the way back!

6. Picnic table 100m

After a steep climb you'll see this sign pointing down to the picnic area. Go straight ahead.

7. Picnic table (end of walk)

This is the turnaround point of this wetlands adventure, and there are some nice places to sit and soak in the quiet. The picnic table was in ruin but this sign lets you know you've made it!

8. Jumping fish

We did this walk late in the day. After sitting and listening to to the fish jumping, we realised we'd have to make tracks to get back to the car before dark.

9. Swans

You're nearly back to your start point when you cross the little bridge.
