The 'Big Walk' is a difficult hike up Mountain Buffalo beginning at the Eurobin Creek picnic area and cresting at the famous Mt Buffalo Chalet and lookout.
Before heading off, you will need a good level of fitness, preparation, the right supplies and bushwalking experience.
While some guides list this as an intermediate walk, we've given it the maximum 'very difficult' rating. As you ascend the mountain there are many, many stairs, rough terrain and obstacles on the path.
It is 9km one way. Allow 4 - 5 hours one way and arrange for transport at the top, or do a car shuffle. Only the most die-hard and elite athletes should consider attempting the return leg. Although it can be walked in either direction, downhill would be very punishing on the knees.
The first section of the walk is extremely steep. While there is some respite after 2km, the remainder of the walk is also uphill, see elevation below. Allow five hours for this walk and enough daylight to safely reach the finish before it gets dark.
So, if you're fit, prepared and keen, this spectacular walk is bound to be a highlight of walking in Victoria's high country.
When to go:
October to April. Check weather conditions before setting off. It can snow in the Victorian Alps at any time of year.
What to pack:
Adequate water for the hike. Water is only available at the start and finish of this walk.
Sun protection, sunscreen, hat, and glasses.
Warm/waterproof clothing in case of rainfall or snowfall. Weather on the mountain can be unpredictable and change quickly.
Bring your own food and snacks to keep energy levels up for 5 hours of hard work.
Sturdy walking boots as the track is long, rocky, and, did I mention steep?
Transport:
We recommend doing a car shuttle so you have a car at the finishing point. Alternatively, arrange a lift home at the end of the walk.
From the park entrance to the George Day Visitor Centre, it is a 30 minutes drive, so factor that into your timing.
Safety:
Always let someone know your plans before setting out.
Beware of snakes in warm weather. Consider carrying a small first aid kit.
Mobile phone coverage is patchy and varies by provider.
Toilets and drinking water are available at the start and finish points.
Food is not available on the mountain. During summer, a coffee and drinks cart sometimes operates outside the Chalet. The Chalet is closed indefinitely.
Mount Buffalo is a national park so leave your dogs at home. Please take all rubbish home with you.
