This return walk follows the pretty, smooth rock bedded and tree lined Mitta Mitta River from Mitta Mitta township to Mill Picnic Area under a deciduous and indigenous canopy.
Beginning at the Mitta Mitta Historic Park Reserve, this walk immediately encounters an open air museum of large scale mining relics before entering tree branched tunnels running along the river bank. Spring sees a dense green canopy forming to provide summer shade. In autumn deciduous leaves turn the canopy, sides and floor of the track into a closed world of yellow and brown.
Beside you, the river runs broad, fresh and clear over water smoothed stones. The current drags on trailing Weeping Willow tendrils as you pass. It is tranquil and quite romantic.
Anyone steady on their feet can manage this walk. The track is a formed gravel topped path close to the river. It is not always smooth and flat, but does not have any significant unevenness or gradient either. After a second small waterway crossing, the walk rises a bit to the Omeo Highway as the river bank steepens around a bend. Here you will walk beside the Highway for around 400 metres before returning to the riverside via a short set of steps. Keep an eye on any children with you.
Mill Picnic Area is where the old Saw Mill operated. It has sheltered picnic facilities, a fire pit, plenty of parking, non potable water and public toilets.
Dogs must be on a leash and under control at all times.
