This 2.5 kilometre loop walk encompasses both banks of the wonderful Maribyrnong River, connected by the historic Angliss Stock Bridge (1941). The bridge once delivered cattle across from Newmarket to Angliss meatworks.
Newells Paddock Reserve consists of a charming open woodland park adjoining a lovely reclaimed wetland conservation area. Both are great for quiet nature walking and observation. Across the River by the footbridge is Riverside Park. This is a wide, open green space for casual walking and is great for walking the dog.
If you like wildlife, the many birds and fauna you see on the walk will be a pleasure. The Friends of Newell's Paddock have recorded eighty bird species. You can download a list from their website or read the sign at the intersection of the Newell’s Paddock path with the Maribyrnong River Trail. This sign describes some of the species to look out for. Note: the sign also suggests you keep and eye open for snakes in the warmer months.
Paths are either sealed or of compacted granitic sand, smooth and in good condition. Amenities include shelter, BBQ and picnic tables, basketball and netball rings, drinking water, seats and bins. The nearest public toilets are at the Shell Coles Express on Princes Highway.
Dogs in Newell's Paddock
No dogs are permitted in the Wildlife Conservation Area (see signs on site). Dogs must be on leash in the Jamieson Avenue parkland.
Dogs in Riverside Park
An off leash area is planned for the northern half of the reserve beside the tennis courts. All other areas dogs must be on leash.
Public Transport
Bus 404 stops at the corner of Jamieson Avenue / Ballarat Road.
Alternatively, walk to the walk. It is 1.5 kilometres through Footscray Park from the Geelong Rd / Droop St Number 82 tram stop.
Car parking
Newell's Paddock car park is off Jamieson Avenue inside the Reserve.

The western end of Newell's Paddock offers various amenities such as sheltered BBQ and picnic tables, drinking water and basketball and netball rings.
The route shares a section of the extraordinary Maribyrnong River Trail. There are many other walks to enjoy along the river.
The wetlands are a remarkable natural location, thriving beside high density human populations. They are a gift to the community.
Kayaks and canoes are common sights on the river.
For a good view across the Wetlands take advantage of the viewing platform near the end of the Stock Bridge.
The view downstream from the Stock Bridge is along the Maribyrnong River Trail to Kensington Railway Bridge.
This walk does not boast a lot of public art, so when you find it you appreciate it. This ceramic is a fitting tribute to past use of the Angliss Stock Bridge.
With many apartments situated directly to the north of Riverside Park, this big green space is attractive to residents for gathering outdoors.
All paths are smooth and wide, either sealed or compacted granitic sand.
The pier is an appealing spot to take a break, sit and chat, fish or watch the world go by.
In and around Riverside Park is popular for dog walking. The northern half of the park has been slated by the City of Melbourne to become off leash space.
The Conservation Area comes right up to the walking path. Dogs are not permitted in the Conservation Area and must be leashed on the path.
Paths through the Wetlands Conservation Area are smooth, wide compacted granitic sand. They curve around ponds and through wooded areas.
