For mobility aid users seeking a less busy Brimbank Park experience, this alternative to the Cafe to the Weir walk is just the ticket. Sealed paths take you to BBQs, picnics areas, the river and back.

Description

The paths are sealed and the way is clear. Amongst the open grassy lawns, the wooded areas and flowing water of the Maribyrnong River are pretty local birds and wildlife, this a very enjoyable walk or roll.

This walk is accessible to everyone. It is easy by foot, in a wheelchair or using other mobility aids.

The pathways are all sealed and wide enough for a wheelchair. Most paths are wide enough for side by side travel. Wheelchairs have room to turn around.

The walk starts at Picnic Area B where there is an accessible parking beside the accessible toilet and footpath. Both have ramped access. Note there are some tree root rises on the footpath around the car park. There are no steps.

There is also a BBQ and picnic area on the other side of the car park with an accessible parking space.

Sloping paths take you down to the flat oval area beside the river. The steeper slope immediately beside the toilets may be too steep for some mobility aid users. Alternatively, take the much milder slope at the other end of the car park as per the map. This takes you straight to the river or on to the oval, shelter and main picnic grounds. Manual wheelchair users may require some assistance.

Shelters, drinking water, BBQs and picnics tables are provided at the car park and on the river flat below. Most require crossing grassy surfaces to access them. Some have accessible compacted or concrete paths around them. Note: water fountains are not accessible so carry a bottle.

Seating is provided along the walk. Most seats do not have armrests.

Paths are generally exposed to the weather. There is a built shelter and some shade trees along the way.

Dogs must be on a leash. Bicycle riders may share some paths.

There is accessible parking at Car Park A if you wish to drive to the cafe for food and drink services.

Points of Interest

1. Accessible parking Brimbank Park car park B

There is an accessible space with ramped access to the walking path and accessible toilet.

2. BBQ and picnic shelter

On the opposite side of the car park is another accessible space next to a BBQ and picnic shelter.

3. Signage

Informative signs provide maps and descriptions of local features. There are no directional signs along this walk.

4. Two paths to the oval

There are two paths to the oval from the car park. Both are sealed asphalt. The one on the western side is steeper, with a drain and has cracks in it. The northern path is a more accessible option.

5. A gentler slope to the oval

This path down from the car park has a mild slope directly to the river.

6. A second weir

This weir is the second along this stretch of river. The other one is below the cafe. The view upriver is beautiful.

7. Dogs

Dogs are allowed in Brimbank Park. They must be on a leash (unfortunately not all dog owners comply).

8. Magnificent River Red Gum trees

Some of the trees along the river are enormous and very old. They are amazing to look at.

9. Maribyrnong River path

Follow this wide, flat and sealed path as it curves around the oval. The sloping path in the background is not part of this map.

10. The river

You can look down from the path to the river as you walk or roll.

11. Seating

There are seats throughout the park. Not many have armrests like this one of unusual design.

12. Outdoor BBQs and picnic tables

The BBQ at this location has a concrete surround wide enough for wheelchairs. The picnic tables are across the grass. They are not a roll under design.

13. Large shelter

This large shelter and the surrounding seating is a great place for gatherings. Surrounding surfaces are grass lawns. The roof was being repaired.

14. Birdlife

There are many colourful birds in the park, like this mother and fledgeling pair of feeding Top-knot pigeons.

15. Wildlife

There are also plenty of animals who call Brimbank Park home. Some of them are easy to see, like these Eastern grey kangaroos.

16. Tree shade

Most of the walking paths are exposed to the weather. at this location you will find picnic tables beside a band of Red Gum trees.
