This stunning walk consists of two loops starting from the sandy banks of the Barwon River mouth. Take the loops individually or join them together for a 7 km hike.
The first loop follows the Barwon River, under the bridge, past piers and sandy beaches. A coastal trail leads to Barwon Heads Bluff. High up on limestone cliffs, the ocean and estuary views are spectacular! From the headland, head back to town, past birdlife, coastal vegetation and more views.
Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove are linked by a lovely wooden pedestrian bridge and a separate one for vehicles. The second walking loop crosses the bridge and travels up the long white sands of Ocean Grove Surf Beach.
Public toilets and drinking water are available at Frank Ellis Reserve, Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove Surf Beach. There are lots of cafe options, too.
This walk takes you along a mix of sandy beaches, gravel paths and concrete walkways. Some steep stairs towards the Bluff.
Dog allowed on-lead on all trails. Observe restrictions on beaches and conservation areas prohibiting dogs. Check City of Greater Geelong website and signage.

Start at the Ozone Road jetty and head along the sand. The Barwon River estuary is tidal so the width of the sandy path will vary.
Wander along the white sands of the river beaches. This is a popular spot for swimming and relaxing.
The pier has fantastic views for people fishing and dining at the restaurant. Take the stairs around the restaurant to the concrete promenade.
The river water has now joined Bass Strait. The elevated walkway is easier underfoot than the sandy sections of this walk.
Take the stairs up to the limestone cliffs.
Great views across to Ocean Grove main beach, the waters of the estuary and out to Bass Strait.
The walkway towards the headlands has amazing views of Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary. If you're lucky, you might spot seals, dolphins or whales.
Looking west to the stunning Thirteenth Beach, a popular surf spot. Take note of no access areas as paths lead to the beach. The area is nesting habitat of endangered Hooded Plovers.
Follow the track to the headland back towards the town. Lovely coastal vegetation, birdlife and views of the river mouth.
Luckily for walkers, the Barwon Heads Bridge has a separate pedestrian bridge across the Barwon River. The bridge links Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove.
Ocean Grove beach is a long stretch of wide sandy beach and surf.
The beach is seasonally patrolled with excellent ocean swimming and surfing. Dogs are allowed on the beach but restrictions apply.
