Melbourne's CBD explored through conversations inspired by its staircases and steps.
The Jane's Walk festival is an annual series of free, volunteer-led urban walks that honour the urban thinker Jane Jacobs and her idea that cities can provide something for everybody only when they are created by everybody. The walks are as varied as the people taking part, and they usually last about 90 minutes. Through the simple act of walking and talking, the festival creates space for people to connect, share, and develop ideas about where their communities and cities are at and where they are headed.
There are three walks planned for Melbourne, all within the difference parts of the CBD. Melbourne Step by Step and will use some of the CBD's steps and stairs to generate dialogue on place and experiences of Melbourne.
A place to meet friends; take a shortcut; promenade; see a show; dine on dumplings; or congregate to protest Melbourne's stairs and steps not only effect how we traverse the city but also set the tone for how we experience it and forge its identity. Hidden stairs tell forgotten histories while other steps lead to vibrant places of creativity. Melbourne's stairs function for the community to gather, move, share and change, like the city itself. Civic histories, personal experiences and lively discussion are encouraged
