Description

Find out more

This short loop walk wanders through pretty coastal wood and heathland. The dense sections of banksia forest evoke childhood stories of fantasy and magic. There is a lookout with views across a steep gully to the colourful Pinnacles formation. The contrasting red clay and white sand layers are quite arresting, as are the views along the escarpments of the coast.

Keep your eyes peeled for woodland bird observations. New Holland honey-eaters frequently flit across the heath tops. Wattle birds and lorikeets frequent the nectar rich eucalypts and banksias in the forest when in bloom.

The walk follows a meandering formed path of compacted gravel or firm sand. It includes one short, mild rise from a bridged moist gully with steps.

Directional signs clearly point the way. There is car parking and a public toilet. Carry your own drinking water.

If you want to walk further take the extension of the Pinnacles walking track from this loop down to Pinnacle Beach below.

Pets are not permitted in the National Park.

Points of Interest

1. The loop begins

The walk starts immediately from the car park at a clear trailhead sign.

2. Entering the banksia forest

The initial forest experience is predominantly dry, open eucalypt woodland. As you approach the coast it transforms into a banksia fantasyland of dense serrated foliage and bright yellow candles.

3. Lookout

A lookout high above the steep Pinnacles gully provides a great view of the vivid coloured layers of the eroded hillside opposite.

4. View to Lennards Island

As you move further around the track the rest of the coastline is revealed through to Lennards Island.

5. The track

The track is composed of either formed compacted gravel or firm sandy soil.

6. Looking across the heath

After the banksia forest comes a stretch of exposed heathland providing uninterrupted views down to Pinnacle Beach and out to the Pacific Ocean. Another track from the car park takes you to the beach.

7. A wet gully

There is one wet area on the walk. It is crossed by a small footbridge with steps up the opposite side.
