Summary

Experience how great it can be to walk and "Love Living Local", experiencing the High St and some backstreets, with opportunities along the way to shop/eat/play/see art!

Description

From the corner of Clarendon St and the High St, walk up the eastern side of the High St to Raleigh St, where you’ll see an amazing mural on the building. Turn east and go along Raleigh St until the pocket park on the northern side of the road. Go through this park and then the park connecting Gooch St to Rossmoyne St. Stop in the parks to admire the mosaics. Kids love them, and to play in the boat!
Walk along Rossmoyne St back to the High St (and check out more stunning mosaics on the street corner by the church) and then north to Flinders St, turning east along it until St Davids St, then north to Penders Park. En route you’ll probably share the streets with parents wit kids and elderly residents – they’re always “life on the streets” and do say hello as people are very friendly; there is a great sense of community.
At Penders Park you may wish to have a drink from the water fountain, use the toilets and/or use the playground if you have children. Then see some local history when you walk back along Penders St, where it bends before the High St, where you will see the old electricity substation. On the corner of the High St there is an old drive-through service station, from the days when cars were just starting to take hold of our cities.
Continue north along the High St until you can cross safely at Dundas St then walk back along the High St towards the city and the start point. Along the way there are many interesting buildings, shops and places to eat/grab a coffee. The window displays in the party shop will be a drawcard for children. While there are many new cafes, there is an old Italian Patisseria which is run by a lovely elderly husband-wife team and stepping into the shop is a step back in time. The Lions Charity shop is in an interesting Art Nouveau building and you might like to support charity/grab a bargain to complete your walking outing!
