Description

Find out more

Take this sealed path across a Goulburn River floodplain to enjoy the forest and watch for animals and birdlife.

This walk or roll is accessible to everyone by foot or mobility aid.

The path is sealed and wide enough for side-by-side travel, passing and wheelchair turning. It is generally flat with some mild inclines. There is a drop off to dirt, grass and occasional drains. There is mild camber toward path edges. There are some root rises.

Footbridges with safety rails cross waterways. They have small gaps and lips where surfaces change. Bollard gaps narrow to 1.5 meters.

Forest areas are quiet with tree shade from overhead branches. The section of the path beside the Midland Highway is exposed and has traffic noise.

For shorter distances plan to return before the end as mapped because there are no alternative collection points with vehicle access. Mobile phone coverage is good.

Signs are not all of accessible design, look closely. Learn more of The Flats history when you pass the Mooroopna Aboriginal History Walk.

The return point of the path is a footbridge across the river which could connect the accessible path to Victoria Park Lake. Access is limited by a steep short on ramp patch and lip.

Rest areas
Seating is limited to distantly spaced benches. Chinaman's Garden has rotundas near the river with limited access and at an interesting, fully accessible War Memorial. For refreshment, Mooroopna centre is 1km by footpath or car.

Toilets
The nearest accessible toilets and drinking water are in Kidstown Adventure Playground 7287 Midland Hwy (150m via underpass), or Water Tower Gardens 69 McLennan St (1km) Mooroopna. Carry water.

Dogs must be leashed, cyclists may share the path.

The area is a large bush park where some people may sleep rough.

Public transport
Bus No. 1 stops at the car park. A sealed footpath via an underpass connects the opposite side which has a seated shelter. Both stops have passenger information.

Parking
There is a large car park connected to the path with room for side and rear loading. There are no marked spaces. The surface is sealed, smooth and firm on a gentle slope. Parking wheel buffers have narrow gaps, wheelchair access is across dirt at the end of the car park.

Points of Interest

1. War Memorial and bus stop

This fully accessible and sensitive Memorial shares stories from all wars in which Australia has been engaged. Next to it is the stop for the No. 1 bus between Mooroopna and Shepparton.

2. Car park

The McLennan St car park is large, sealed, smooth and open. There are no space markings. Wheel buffers protect the path, but gaps are too narrow for wheelchairs. There is a wider dirt gap at the end.

3. Maintenance and flooding

Grass beside the path was cut with Council workers operating on site. Recent resurfacing to 3.6m wide here has smoothed out many bumps. Be aware flooding as per the indicator can be fast and high.

4. Chinaman's Gardens

This picnic spot has a rotunda near the river bank. However, the surrounds are rough dirt and grassy areas unsuitable for mobility aids. Note: there are no bins. Take your rubbish with you.

5. One slope

The first 35 meters of the path slopes mildly (no rests) from the car park. Some manual wheelchair users may require assistance on return. Signs are damaged here and there was some glass on the path.

6. The Goulburn River

The path touches on one river bend early in the walk. You can see it through the trees. Being a river floodplain, the area is prone to mosquitoes at dusk. Carry repellent.

7. Root rises and camber

Be mindful, there are some lumpy root rises along the way and the path may camber slightly toward the edges.

8. Footbridges and boardwalks

The floodplain footbridges and boardwalks have safety rails. The entry gap here is 1.7 meters. The bridge is ageing, wooden handrails may splinter. Where surfaces change watch for lips and cracks.

9. A significant intersection

These signs point to an underpass to Kidstown Adventure Playground to the north (150m) and Mooroopna Aboriginal Historical Walk to the south (a coarse gravel loop not suitable for manual wheelchairs).

10. Drop offs

The path has drop offs to surrounding dirt and grassed areas. There are occasional drains and reinforcements.

11. Birdlife

Watch the canopy and understory for native animals and birds, such as this Laughing Kookaburra. There are many hollows to call home.

12. Seating and direction signs

Only a couple of bench seats are provided along the path. Direction signs are dark green text on slightly lighter treated wooden posts with arrows and distance marked. They require a close look.

13. Aged infrastructure

Infrastructure along the path needs work. Such as this cable safety rail now unsupported due to rotten posts.

14. Goulburn River footbridge

The mapped path returns from the Goulburn River footbridge because it is not accessible to everyone. A very steep, short asphalt patch with lips blocks access to Victoria Park Lake opposite.

15. Underpasses

There are 2 underpasses below the Midland Highway causeway. This one connects to the bus stop opposite.

16. Bus stop opposite

This stop has shelter, seating, passenger information and a sealed footpath to the underpass connecting to the walk. There was evidence people may sleep rough in the underpass at times.
