Whether teeming with life in wetter seasons or hauntingly atmospheric when drier, Winton Wetlands is a fascinating location. This site is a must see for all nature lovers.
This short gravel walking track is well marked and suitable for all ages. It gradually loops, showcasing local woodland bird and plant species. This is a walk for all seasons. However, summer can be very hot. Remember to carry food, water, first aid and be SunSmart.
At this location a wooded embankment meets a wetland shoreline. Where ecosystems meet species diversity typically increases because each species has the opportunity to utilise resources found in adjacent systems.
The belt of River Red Gums of various ages found here originates with seed deposits at past high water marks. Look out for one particularly large and ancient River Red Gum in the middle of the loop as you pass.
Interpretive signs along the route provide interesting insights into the creatures and features of the site.
Pets are not permitted in Winton Wetlands.
From the Mokoan Hub and Cafe head south along the main car park for 700m. There are plenty more parking spaces here, picnic tables and clean public toilets at the nearby boat ramp.

Picnic tables are situated south of the old boat ramp next to the entrance to the Woodland Walk. Signs clearly mark the trailhead. Clean public toilets are nearby.
The track is smooth gravel easily negotiable by foot. It is short and flat enough for all ages to enjoy.
Winton Wetlands provides a great diversity of habitat. Here extensive reed beds provide shelter for small birds and animals from larger predators.
The place really is an observer, photographer and artist's dream. It offers a different palette for each season and expansive vistas to simply contemplate or creatively capture.
Winton Wetlands is a haven for raptors. The combination of water, vast reed-beds, surrounding grasslands, woodlands and rocky ridge lines provides a wide range of prey.
The scale of the wetlands is enormous. There is always birdlife to satisfy the most demanding observer. When the surface water is expanding the most appropriate description is "teeming with life".
Installed along the walk are interesting interpretive signs describing features and local inhabitants.
A foot bridge has been constructed to cross a gully at the top of the loop.
Look closely into the surrounding foliage for resident and visiting woodland birds such as this White-plumed Honeyeater.
