Summary

Take this short return walk to a loop around the low rocky granite outcrop known as Robertsons Hill. The site of the earlier homestead and dairy are interesting. The wetland landscapes are grand.

Description

This location was once the site of the Robertson family house and dairy. At Robertsons Hill you will find yourself in a secluded part of the wetlands allowing the opportunity for some great bird and wildlife spotting. From the top of this gently sloping elevated rocky outcrop you will absorb beautiful views across Winton and Greens Swamps.

The walk travels an easy to follow dirt track. You can choose to venture over some rocky terrain to get to the top of this low rise hill. However, if you leave walking the rise until you get to the southern side, the slope is smooth granite pavement more accessible for all ages.

Pets are not permitted in Winton Wetlands.

This is a walk for all seasons. It can get hot in summer. Carry food, water, first aid, be SunSmart.

No camping or fires are permitted at Robertsons Hill. Camping is permitted at nearby Bush Camp where there is a picnic table as well (travel another 6km along Lake Mokoan Road. this involves booking and payment to be made via the website: Winton Wetlands camping The entrance is on the right. The nearest public toilets are at the Mokoan Hub car park.

Directions:
From the Mokoan Hub and Cafe head right along Lake Mokoan Road for 3.4km. There is a sign with a map of the walk and gravelled car park immediately on your right.

Parts of Winton Wetlands are remote. In case of emergency call 000.

Points of Interest

1. Roadside map

The entrance to the walk is marked by a handy roadside map beside Lake Mokoan Road. Walk from the small gravel car park to prevent unnecessary vehicle damage to the track and environment beyond.

2. The return track

The dirt come grassy track is easy to follow. It can be muddy in wetter weather, but is otherwise easy to navigate.

3. The loop

The track arrives at the gentle rise that is Robertsons Hill. From here you can make a circuit of the base. Exploring the slopes is rewarding. This northern side is the rougher approach.

4. Robertson's house and dairy

The remnants of Robertson's house and dairy can be explored on site. Also remaining are a few artefacts from the agricultural past. Please - take only photos and leave only footprints.

5. Birdlife

Bird diversity is a special feature of the wetlands. Parrots are plentiful including many resident Sulphur-crested Cockatoos. This sociable species is worth watching for various entertaining antics.

6. A drowned forest

Winton Wetlands is the largest wetland restoration project in the Southern Hemisphere. Draining the area previously dammed as Lake Mokoan has left a striking skeletal legacy, a drowned forest.

7. Stock fencing

The last of the dairy post and rail fencing still stands.

8. Granite pavement

For an easy walk to the hill summit, approaching from the south across the gentle rise of clear granite pavement makes best sense. It also causes less damage to vegetation.

9. A view from the top amongst pink granite

As you ascend to the peak for some great views across the wetlands note the different shades of pink granite. Conveniently, this rock right at the top is probably the best example.

10. A small patch

The eastern slope presents a different perspective on Robertsons Hill. Here you will find a small woodland patch.

11. Wildlife

Walks in the wetlands encounter wildlife including many reptiles indigenous to the Australian bush. Beautiful Red-bellied Black Snakes are common in the wetlands. Keep your distance and so will they.
